Earwigs are gross little bugs that can make quite the scream come out of the unsuspecting housewife. If you have an infestation of these bugs in your home, you are probably going to want to call the pest control company. Before you do, take the time to understand a little more about these bugs, and what you can do to prevent them on your own.

What They Are

Earwigs are small burrowing insects that are about a half an inch long and have a reddish-brown coloration. These insects are primarily nocturnal and tend to come out more in the summer when the temperatures are warm, but you can see them in the winter as well. They have pincers at the end of their abdomens that can look quite scary, particularly to little children, but they are not really used to bite that often. Of course, should you pick them up on this end, you will notice a small sting.

One common myth about earwigs is that they crawl into your ear while you are sleeping, causing you to be sick. This is not true. They do, however burrow in basements and gardens, which is why you can have a problem with them quite easily in a residential property.

Earwigs will eat just about everything. This can bring devastation to your garden. That is why pest control for these critters is so important.

Controlling Earwigs

Problems with earwigs typically occur when the nest is somewhere near your home. Controlling these creatures means finding these colonies and properly destroying them. However, finding the nests can be extremely challenging, because there are not outward signs of them as there would be for an ant colony.

Inside your home you can hire a pest control company to apply a chemical designed to kill earwigs. It should be applied to the foundation, both inside and outside your home, as well as openings such as doors, windows and vents.

Sometimes the critters can get inside your kitchen cabinets or other enclosed spaces of your home. For these infestations, you will want to use earwig traps. You can also use earwig traps near vegetable gardens where it is not safe to use pesticides.

If you have earwigs inside your home, you also have them outside your home. Contact a pest control company to learn what you can do to locate and then stop the colonies. There are several different chemicals you can use in outdoor spaces to try to control this problem. Consider a time-released product, for instance, to help ensure that you get all of the bugs, even if you have not successfully located the infestation.
